Granger angrily snapped, “I don’t want to do any more dress rehearsals! I want to go get my dad out, then erase this psychotic event from my memory banks! Being hunted like fugitives is not my idea of a good time, dammit!”
The outburst startled Satya and Auri, so EZ smoothed Granger’s hair back behind his ear and quietly said, “Remind me to discipline you later for talking like me. We are going to get Dad out just like we discussed.
“Remember, if anyone makes a mistake, then we are all going down the river, like my daddy used to say. We practice, practice, practice, but only run once. Your Uncle Jacob knows this from experience, which is why the extra effort up front.”
After a few seconds EZ added, “And, yes, I want to go get him too, dammit!”
The children all seemed to brighten a little with their smiles as EZ grinned. Juan was somber. Petra was obviously stewing about something.
She finally protested, “This is no different than when the Nazis came to power. First, they simply swept away everyone’s civil rights and then began imprisoning those who thought differently, or worse, weren’t of Aryan descent.
“Bad things happened to good people. The crime occurred when people turned a blind eye if they weren’t personally affected by what was happening. Collectively, they had a chance. Yet each dissident group got picked off. Then, before you knew it, whole countries were being attacked for how they believed. No one would stand up and say no, this is wrong!
“Here we are again! Almost 90 years later, individual freedoms, and people, being eradicated for the greater good of the state! Humanity doesn’t remember the previous Holocaust sufferings of nations and peoples, but we do!”
Petra stared hard at each of their faces to make certain she was driving the point home. “This is what the R-Group has done and will continue to do, children and honored colleagues. We will fight the new tyranny, to be sure. First, though, we must run so we are not caught in their net.”
Juan nodded thoughtfully as he listened to her impassioned demands. “I know none of you are keen to leave your home here in Switzerland for our target destination, but sometimes we must re-invent ourselves to survive.”
Jacob asked, “Is the jet ready for our next adventure? And more importantly, are you, Juan? We are asking an awful lot from you since you and Julie are not wanted like we are.”
Juan rolled his eyes sarcastically. “What, you’re worried I’ll turn you in for the bounty? You, as well as the other team members, have saved my bacon several times. I have a lot to prove here for my peace of mind and for the sake of my honor.”
JW, quite pleased with the set of circumstances and grinning from ear to ear, loudly proclaimed, “Let’s go do this!”
Petra pulled out her encrypted burner phone and punched in one number. The called party answered on the first ring. “Ready, Bruno?”
