Andy was still in a terse mood at being forced to leave Su Lin to someone else’s care while he fulfilled the required customer visit. Everything seemed like it was against him. So many things were knocked over or slammed closed which clearly demonstrated his dissatisfied state. Carlos sensed that Andy was in a grumpy mood but wanted Andy to feel comfortable with the responsibility hand-off.
Carlos suggested, “Now don’t forget to pack fresh underwear and take your good toothbrush this time. You know how California ladies judge men by the sporty briefs they wear when they are trying to decide who they should take home to meet their momma. A good toothbrush keeps all the debris from collecting on your smile, like tofu for instance.”
Half annoyed by everything anyway, Andy rolled his head to one side while he looked rather incredulously at Carlos as he reminded, “I’m not going out there for some California Dreaming Cakes, budrow! I have an extra fussy customer who doesn’t believe in remote anything when paying for our services. I don’t want to stay any longer than I have to among the fresh California fruit salad clowns!
“We Georgia folk have this impression of California people that they like to fill their hot tubs with carbonated water, get in naked with the eight close friends they met that morning, as they bob for illegal recreational drugs! I typically work twelve to fourteen hours a day, so I can get the hell out of Hollywood quicker. I’m not going there to squeeze the fruits to go in my shopping bag, so stop trying to cheer me up!”
Carlos blinked a few times and offered, “I could do the California gig if you want to shepherd Su Lin with these characters. That might make you feel more comfortable, Andy. Or, if you prefer, I can stand here and take some more verbal hostility if that will help improve your disposition.”
Andy, now mad at himself and quite chastened by Carlos’s remark, calmed down and apologized, “I’m sorry, Carlos. I just feel rather unsettled by leaving my ward with these people at this particular time. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something seems wrong. I feel like I’m running out on you and her with me being so unsettled. I didn’t mean to take it out on you. Forgive me, my friend.”
Carlos studied Andy a few seconds and asked, “Do they really party naked together in a hot tub full of recreational drugs and sparkling water? Are you sure I can’t take your place for this trip?”
Andy grinned and said, “Go do your chores, boy! Make sure nothing happens to Su Lin while I’m gone, or it’s the woodshed for you, me bucko!”
Carlos smiled at Andy’s comment and the fact that he had gotten him out of his poor mood before Andy had left for the airport.
