Annoyed at the lack of response, Paign continued, “So, do you have any idea what the war plan includes, especially as it involves us?” He paused. “Well, do you?”
But Anders wasn’t paying attention to his cousin’s grumbling. Now that their rescue group had been summoned back to council area and stood among hundreds of gargoyles, his attention was drawn elsewhere. All of the gargoyles had just turned to face the lower portion of the eastern ridge. There were more important matters to listen to.
A great blaring, like a trumpet, burst the air. Paign looked for the source of the blasts and realized it came from Lohxnahr! Paign could see the little creature standing near the base of the ridge.
Everyone’s attention fixed on a long, shallow ledge above the tree line. The War Council stood, assembled, across the length of the ledge, with Quarastohr and Uud-Rement next to each other.
Quarastohr’s wings already outspread, he cast his arms wide and declared, “Comrades! My brothers! My sisters! Behold! The time is upon us!” Bowing, Quarastohr turned to the other gargoyle standing with him.
“We can expect that they expect us!” Uud-Rement bellowed down into the great gargoyle host arrayed upon the valley floor. The commanders perched against the vast, vertical eastern wall of the Ten Pinnacles, about two hundred feet above the base. This provided them a clear view of the entire army. Peter realized this also meant that every gargoyle could see them, unimpeded.
