“No,” Kimar said flatly. “No created being has power over that which hasn’t yet come into existence. Though my brother’s thirst for domination is boundless, he has not grown so arrogant as to believe he can command time into the future.”
“But how is it that he could ‘command time’ into the past, Kimar?” Danielle asked.
“He could not, if it were left to his strength and influence, and that of his followers. Although he wields much power and control, he does not even now dominate more than pockets within the human realm,” Kimar grumbled.
“Well, then how—”
“With the great Key, his power could reach into the past.”
Amy could see Danielle’s face screw up and knew she was about to ask Kimar a third time, “How?” Gratefully, the hulking gargoyle continued. Perhaps he, too, noticed the look on his youthful inquisitor’s face.
“We have told you the nature of the Key. You are aware of how it came to be, and what it contains. Yes?”
Danielle nodded.
“The power of human love is vast. It often wells up and fills the hearts of humans. It inspires deeds of great beauty. From the immense depths of human love come enormous acts of selflessness and sacrifice. Wondrous works are born from love, in your kind’s music and art. Your most treasured writings and scriptures speak of love. Above all else, humans value and honor love. The abiding connections it provides from one soul to another are most prized. Love transcends space and time, even bonding hearts that were sundered from each other due to death. And it is that immense power of love, the power to span time—and even death—that Kahrnahrgx seeks to pervert and subjugate to his will. With that power, he believes he can wield dominion over not just this age, but all ages past.”
