Kimar seized the opportunity to retreat from the battle with Danielle safely in his arms, still clutching tightly to the box. Vaulting off the ruined floor in a powerful leap, Kimar shot through the roof opening and flew rapidly away from what was left of Danielle’s home. The Key of Kahrnahrgx glowed faintly within its plastic shelter. Quickly, he caught up to Ercen, whose flight was labored by the weight of two human adults.
“Nahgflint will not be far behind me!” he shouted at Ercen over the wind whistling past them and the steady thumping of their enormous wings. “We must drop to the earth and part away as soon as we can, before he—”
A high-pitched wail preceded the ball of flame as it hurtled in between the gargoyles, and was followed by the screams of Amy and Danielle as they looked behind them. The gargoyle Nahgflint was indeed in hot pursuit of his prey. In the night sky, he was visible only because of his flaming eyes and the glint of moonlight on his furiously flapping wings. Their enemy was gaining on them. Fast.
Immediately, Kimar and Ercen tucked in their wings behind them, rolled over on their backs, tipped their heads towards the ground and plummeted downward.
