The neighbors grumbled, "Won't work. Nonsense!" They went back to their homes.
"Cluck! I'll bake the dough with Mrs. Mousy."
Mrs. Mousy said, "The sun dries mud; we can dry the dough."
Prairie Hen laid sticky clumps of dough on hot stones, which baked the dough hard enough to hold.”
While the dough baked bread, the chicks gathered sweet blackberries, Mrs. Mousy's husband brought honey to smooth on top of the bread. The baking aroma called to Ground Hog, Jack Rabbit, Musk Rat, their families, and her neighbors.
"Who will help eat these lovely loaves of bread?"
"I will!” answered Ground Hog, Jack Rabbit, Musk Rat, and all her neighbors.
"BOK! No, you will not. I found the seeds. Mrs. Mousy and I planted them and tended them while they grew. We harvested the grain, threshed the berries, and ground them into flour. Then we baked the dough into these lovely loaves of bread. Mrs. Mousy, her family, and my chicks will eat the bread”.
"Cluck! What a feast we had!"
