I remember speaking at a conference one time about the power of the story. I was trying to convey how storytelling was an important new trend. Some of the audience members nodded their heads, as if they had been ahead of this trend for years. “Ah yes, we believe in the power of storytelling,” they said. And I realized I had not gotten my point across.
The trend is about so much more than telling a good story. There’s little doubt that nonprofit organizations have been using storytelling for a long time. In fact, some organizations have lived off of one single story for the past twenty years—I say that a bit facetiously but not entirely.
The issue is more than storytelling. The trend requires your story to cut through the noise above all the other stories being told right now. You’ve got to tweak and re-tweak your message through multiple angles. Let’s pause a moment and talk about the noise first.
