The sun disappeared, leaving them in a shadowed room. It was too early for the sun to set. A grittiness lived in the air. Jade felt like she was eating sand every time she swallowed. Her body was relaxed. She didn’t sense any danger.
Jade and Serin crept out of the kitchen. Serin put a gyiar, a barrier made of Bai Ron, around both of them.
“Do you know what this is?” Jade asked.
Serin’s childhood memories returned. Some days Jade almost forgot he was kidnapped and imprisoned for twenty years.
Serin stepped in front of her. After all this time, he didn’t realize she hated when he did that.
“No, we should ask Dad.”
The cloud turned the living room an eerie blood red. It seemed determine to suck all the moisture from Jade’s body.
Jade slipped around Serin and headed for the door. The property was covered in a strong gyiar. No enemy could get through.
Jade peeked out of the window. No one outside. With Serin grumbling at her back, she opened the door. Red stained the world. It was like a fog, shielding most of the yard from even her sharp sight. The carriages were usually visible from the front porch. The strange cloud covered them. She couldn’t hear the horses.
A figure emerged from the fog. Jade planted her foot back ready to destroy whatever wanted to cause her new family harm. A red glowing form moved through the red soup.
