“As a child, we had a rabbit in our backyard eating Mom’s plants,” Divine said. Why was he saying this? “I set an all metal trap for it. I spent days in Dad’s garage giving it sharp points. The animal was eating our food. The trap snapped the thing’s legs off. We ate rabbit for two days.”
He couldn’t look at Shade. He told that story in school and had to see a doctor every evening for a month. Some woman showed up at his house later and threatened to take him away from Mom and Dad.
Shade would think he was a monster too. Why wasn’t she saying anything? Why did he say that?
A howling laugh stunned his ears. Shade fell backwards kicking her arms and legs as breathless laughs spilled from her. She thought he was funny. He never made anyone laugh.
Wraith leapt around her, licking her face.
She found his story funny.
Shade sat up rubbing her palms into her eyes. “Now I want rabbit.”
