Just think about this for a moment. How much influence does
your mother have with you, your boss, your teacher, your children? If
your mother were to ask for you to do something that you know Jesus
Himself would not have you do, would you do it? Now, of course we
would say no to what we consider the “big” sins, like murder, adultery,
stealing, and so on. But what about things that aren’t so obvious?
What if your mom and dad were divorced and your dad needed
your assistance for something simple like helping him move or going
to the grocery store. That sounds pretty simple, except he cheated
on your mom, and was physically abusive to her for years while he
was stuck in his drug addiction. Although he is now clean and sober,
and has been for some years, your mother still hasn’t forgiven him.
Any form of assisting him, in her eyes, would appear that you are now
making an allegiance with him, and betraying her. When you father
calls and asks you for help, do you help him, or not? Some may say,
“Well I’ll just help him and not tell her about it.” But is that really be-
ing honest?
There are things that can seem so simple, as in this example, that
we allow others to carry more influence with us than Jesus. If we are

really honest, we sometimes tend to follow them instead of following
Jesus. Think about the people in your life, your spouse, boyfriend /
girlfriend, family, friends, anyone who may be in your life who may
have more influence with you than Jesus does. We have to come to
a place that Jesus has more influence with us than anyone else. We
have to learn how to allow Him to help us with the decisions in our
life, without feeling that we are causing pain to others. In count-
ing the cost to follow Jesus, we must first count the cost of being His
disciple. In being His disciple we must put Him first and allow Him,
instead of others, to have complete influence over us.
