Just as in any other relationship that closeness needs to develop,
our relationship with Jesus develops exactly the same way. Think
about it this way, when I was trying to get a closer relationship with
Amanda (my wife) there were things that I did to get to a deeper,
more intimate relationship with her. I had to spend time with her.
We had many conversations in which we had to listen to one another.
I had to find out who she was, and she had to find out who I was.
There were some intentional things that I did to develop the close-
ness in my relationship with her. I had to put her above all other rela-
tionships that I had in my life at that time. To get to that deeper level
of intimacy with her cost me something. However, when we got to
that place of closeness, I began to trust her more and more because I
knew her on a deeper level.
Our expectation is to have the benefits of being best friends with
Jesus. However, there are those who only want to have the respon-
sibilities of an acquaintance. Being best friends means that we talk
frequently, we are open and honest with one another, we spend time
together, and in most cases we like the same things. An acquaintance
says, I know you, I’ve seen you around, we’ve talked once or twice, and
may even hold some conversations with one another, but we aren’t
really close.
