Ryan went out to the hallway. Everything was quiet, and he could see nothing was moving because the hallway was dimly lit with nightlights. He tiptoed downstairs to the kitchen for some ice water. He grabbed a plastic cup and filled it with ice, careful not to rattle the cubes when removing them from the freezer.
Ryan walked into the dining room, sipping his water. He stood before the French doors and saw his full body reflection. Since he was wearing only his boxer shorts, he considered moving away from the window so he wasn’t seen from the street.
A head appeared outside a few feet from the glass, just over the reflection of his right shoulder. Someone was on the porch looking in.
Ryan gasped and dropped the plastic cup of water. It hit with a dead sound and water splashed on his ankles and shins. He involuntarily stepped back. The head now had an upper body and moved forward. Ryan saw he looked at himself, or his double. Yet it wasn’t his double, really. This other Ryan-thing looked diseased. The skin was a mottled lifeless green, and the eyes nearly black except for a hint of red like the underside of hot charcoal. The lips pulled back into a semblance of a smile to display teeth that seemed to be chiseled into uneven jagged shapes. As the figure reached the window, it lifted and placed its hands palms up on the glass and leaned towards Ryan. The fingers looked vaguely like talons. The nail of the left index finger tapped softly on the glass as if in greeting. The hair on Ryan’s neck stood on end.
