The Last Column in Foundation Hall was the final thing on my list of things to see.
I had saved it to the end for a reason.
On May 28, 2002, during a ceremony to close the site, the Last Column had been carried out in similar fashion to the way bodies had been carried out: up the ramp and covered with an American flag. The column of steel bore, in spray paint, the letters and numbers FDNY 343, NYPD 23, PAPD 37.
The letters SQ41 had also been painted on the column.
What I didn’t know until 2014 was that SQ41 had been the first thing painted on that column. Squad 41 firefighters had sprayed SQ41 on the steel column as it stood in the pile of debris to mark the area they found Bruce’s body.
