“You should’ve seen Saundra’s dress,” Laura said, joyfully describing the events of the previous evening. “Her ball gown was a brilliant red and was very striking. The bodice of her dress was off the shoulders. Its giant hoopskirt was the biggest I’ve ever seen. Rows of ruffles flowed down the sides of the skirt. They flared out as Saundra danced around the ballroom. All the young men flocked to her side to admire her,” Laura elaborated. Especially Bradford, she thought. Laura didn’t add that she had felt taunted by the sly smile Saundra threw her way every time she circled around the room with Bradford.
Laura went on to describe Saundra’s many appetizing delicacies. Some she hadn’t seen since before the war. “Saundra actually brought in a chef from New Orleans. My favorite dish was the seasoned shrimp with a spicy Creole sauce.” Laura explained how Saundra’s servants carried the delicious hors d’oeuvres on solid silver trays as they served the guests.
