A soft light from the full moon illuminated her daughter’s room enough to show Laura that Jenny was indeed uncovered. After pulling the covers over Jenny and giving her a quick kiss, Laura tiptoed back into the hall. Her eyes were now totally adjusted to the dark hall, and she was quick to catch a flash of movement in her room. She froze in the doorway as she recognized the man who had been in her room the night before. He seemed to be feeling around on the bed, searching for her. As though he sensed her presence, he quickly ran in her direction. She felt his warm breath on her cheek as he came to her side. Before he could touch her, however, Laura heard a voice near her window yell, “Halt!” The loud shout from the second man caused the intruder to shove her to the cold tile before running down the hall.
Dizziness overcame her when she hit her head. She lay on the hard tile, fighting to stay conscious. Laura tried to see what had happened to the two men who had rushed past her. Moonlight streamed into the window, making her aware that the tall, thin man who had frightened the intruder away had returned and was now leaning over her. He asked, “Are you okay?”
