David wheeled Lupe’s wheelchair down the ramp at City College to the stadium where her team warmed up for their last game. The girls broke rank and gathered around her, Coach Ferguson standing by her side. Lupe could feel her eyes fill with tears, something she had promised herself that she would not do. She spotted Amelia among the players, and her eyes were misty as well.
“Welcome back,” the other players called out. “It’s great to see you.” For Lupe, their response was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
Amelia leaned over her to whisper in her ear. “How long?” she asked.
Lupe could only press her lips together and shake her head. She didn’t know how much longer she would be in a cast and have to use the wheelchair. Both girls knew that the university coach was not happy to get the news about Lupe’s injury.
The umpire signaled for the game to begin, and the players left Lupe’s side and headed for the dugout. Her eyes followed them, and she wished she could rise up and go with them.
