Lupe was ready to graduate and transfer to the university with a softball scholarship. The end of her sophomore year as a City College student athlete was just weeks away. She knew she had to keep her focus. Two years ago, her high school team deteriorated in the last few games, and her scholarship turned to dust. She would not let that happen again.
She was poised for a pitch with the batter in her sights. The team was experienced, road-tested, and the exact opposite of the little girls who played at the East Side Field. The batter made a show of banging her bat on her cleats. Lupe could not let her thoughts slide to her future. Wake up! Lupe thought as she pulled herself back into the action of the game.
The team led by a fragile margin, 7–5. This batter could shatter that lead in one swing if Lupe threw a fastball. The runner at first was ready to steal second.
Lupe packed her resolve into the power of her pitch.
