“Hey, Ron. I had a hard time finding you. This is a really private room. I didn’t even know it was here.” Lupe spoke in a hushed library voice, even though they were the only two people in the small space.
“Good for you. That was your first test.” Ron wasn’t exactly smiling but had a kind of smirk on his face, like he had a trick up his sleeve. He was casually dressed in a sweatshirt and baggy pants, like he was trying to imitate an athlete.
“You’re testing me on the library layout? Let’s get to work, Mr. Tutor.” Lupe tried to sound funny, but something about his words and looks made her suspicious. She plopped her backpack on a small table and dug out her lesson plan draft. “Here’s my assignment. Isn’t that what we’re working on?
“Here. Sit down and let me take a look.” Ron pulled out one of the two chairs in the space. When she sat down, he stood behind her and looked over her shoulder at her paper on the table. “I’m going to show you just a few things that will improve your paper.”
“Can you back off a little, Ron?” Lupe felt trapped in the private room with Ron leaning over her shoulder.
“Just look at this first line.” Instead of backing up Ron crossed his arm over her chest and pointed to the first line of the paper on the table.
“I don’t want any funny business here. Just fix the paper.” Lupe sounded stronger than she felt.
“What are you talking about?” Ron straightened up and backed away in a hurry. “Read it.” Ron’s voice sounded a little shaken.
Lupe hoped she had not misunderstood his movements. Maybe he was clueless about girls. She didn’t mean to react so strongly. She read, “Lesson Plan, Game 4, Girls’ Softball, by Lupe Lopez.” Lupe worried that she had actually frightened him.
