After the weekend, David was released from the hospital in his cast with strict rules about his pain medications. On the first day he was home, Lupe noticed police cruisers on the street but thought little about it. Their neighborhood was no stranger to regular patrols. Lupe moved her own things out on the porch so her brother could have her bedroom. Mama left the Chevy parked at the curb so David could look out the window and see it.
“It feels odd to be home during the week.” Mama refreshed David’s pillow and water pitcher. “Is there always this much traffic?”
“Sometimes on school holidays.” Lupe could see something was bothering her mother.
“Lupe, remember when you asked me about weird things happening?” Mama spoke slowly, and she glanced at David to see if he was sleeping. “When we checked out of the hospital, the clerk said the bill was already paid. I was even thinking of selling your papa’s Chevy to pay for it. It had to be a lot of money after several days.”
“You wouldn’t ever sell Papa’s car, would you?” Lupe thought there was some sort of health insurance, but Mama told her there was no such thing.
“I think the people at the hospital made a mistake. We’ll just enjoy the old car for as long as we can.”
