Lisa Fernandez was the best thing about the game on TV. She pitched for UCLA. Lupe squinted at the tiny TV screen to study Lisa’s stance on the rubber and her windup. In one spectacular play the batter hit Lisa’s pitch into left field, the fielder threw to the shortstop, who threw beyond the catcher, who then had to chase the ball behind the plate. Lisa ran in from the infield to cut the runner off at home. Wham! She was thrown off her feet by the runner but held the ball high in the air after the tag. Out!
“I would do anything if only I could play like that for a college team,” Lupe said out loud. “How am I going to make anyone proud, all alone in this shoebox of a house, eating a stupid frozen dinner while my mama works every night? Papa left us penniless, and David already dropped out of school. I’ve got to get through graduation, that’s it.”
