“He is not real. We are just imagining him. He seems real, but he’s the ghost of a former player who died years ago. Trust me.” Lupe stood, but Selina fell into the chair. “Do not be afraid. He won’t hurt us, but his appearance is not a good sign.”
“Not true. I am here to help you, both of you.” He sat next to Selina. He touched her on the shoulder. She felt nothing. “Don’t be afraid.”
“Is this some kind of joke?” Selina reached up for her own shoulder. “How do you do that? I assumed you were a friend of my dad’s. Does he know?”
“Now, look how you’ve confused her.” Lupe touched Selina’s arm, and the girl turned toward her with suspicion. “Not an evil ghost. He’s just an old player who wants to remain in the game. He’s always looking for new recruits. That is why he appeared to you.”
“You believe I have talent? I hoped that was what you meant when I showed you my brother’s trophies. You promised I’d make it big in the game.” The excitement in Selina’s voice was rising.
“I do. Do not lose your way and go off track. You will succeed.” Clement nodded at Lupe. “Your coach once needed a little support. See how well she’s done.”
“Don’t you dare take credit for my success. I made it by myself, and so can you.” Lupe took a step. “I’ve heard enough and so has she.”
“No, I need to hear this. Why did she need help?” Selina pressed on.
“Did you know that she suffered a serious injury when she was your age? She was hurt in several ways, but she returned to play,” Clemente said.
“Enough.” Lupe was blushing. “After my injury, I felt lost and confused. It’s true. It happens to a lot of players.”
“True, but she came back. She capitalized on a wonderful scholarship. I was lucky enough to witness the whole thing.” Clemente stared at Lupe. “Give me a chance to travel with your team. I won’t interfere.”
