Curious about the message, Selina headed to the message board after Keri left the dorm room. Could it have been Dad calling from home? Might it be from Jake? Did Coach Lupe want to talk with her? Why did this go unmentioned at practice?
Her name appeared on a yellow notice pinned to the corkboard near the cafeteria stairs. Everyone must already know this, she realized as she reached for the note. The message read, Carmen Rosa called on Thursday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m. and wants you to call her back. As Selina dialed the local number, she wondered what this person wanted.
“Welcome, Cece. I’m so glad you got my message. I’ve seen you with the team and feel we should talk at the earliest opportunity. Can I take you to lunch?” Carmen used her most gushy and sincere voice. Lunch sounded good to Selina. Anything to get out of the wretched cafeteria.
“You’ve seen me play? Do you work here at the university?” Selina clung on to the first warm words anyone had shared with her in the last two weeks.
“Oh no, I work in town and am so glad you are on the team. When can we meet? I can pick you up near your dorm.” Carmen rushed forward, not telling Selina her real goal to collect news tips.
“Well, ah, that would be nice. Thank you.” Get off campus for a free meal and get away from gossip in the cafeteria. Selina’s mind held only those thoughts.
“Great, ten minutes in front of Atkins Hall, okay? We’ll enjoy ourselves.” Carmen hung up, not wanting to miss a chance to get a scoop on the team from one of the newest players.
