Selina intended to acknowledge her mistake and tell her father she would be returning home to join the family coffee business following two weeks of preseason training. Anything would be better than the grueling workouts and rookie insults she endured every day. Coach Lupe seemed nothing like she remembered. She treated her older players well but did not speak to Selina.
An unexpected letter from Moreno and a phone call from Carmen Rosa changed everything.
Moreno wrote: Big news! The MLB scout says I am on the finalists’ list for the Pittsburgh Pirates. I may leave for their training camp in two months. Don’t tell your brother yet. Jake and your father believe I am a loser, but they are mistaken. I hope we can meet here in Mexico before I leave. Any chance that’s possible? With love and kisses, Moreno.
“A letter from home?” Keri saw Selina tuck Moreno’s letter into her bra. “Good news, I hope.”
“Great,” Selina said. “It’s from my fiancé.”
“You’re so young. I did not realize you had already become involved. Is this a secret engagement? Why did you leave him in Mexico?”
Selina tried to come up with a plausible answer. She did not trust Keri and hesitated to say anything that might get her in trouble with the coach. Leaving school and joining Moreno might be her best choice.
“Well, I don’t want the news spread around.” Selina realized the entire team would hear the news by lunchtime. She felt some happiness in having something none of them possessed—a fiancé.
