A loud, bossy, upper-class student, Keri Barger, shared Selina’s room, number 102. Everyone called Room 102 the incubator. The team relied on Keri as the veteran second-base player. However, she also bunked with the new players and ensured their understanding of the rules of the dorm, the team, and campus social life. Selina found herself overwhelmed by Keri’s extroverted personality. She appeared to be acquainted with everyone and introduced Selina to the other players and the team-approved boys living next door.
“She’s our rookie this year. From Mexico.” Keri seemed to delight in making Selina feel as small as possible.
“We already have enough Mexicans on this campus,” people often replied. The statement was not funny or kind.
