The provost’s PR meeting turned out to be a success for Lupe. She made a big splash with her news about the team’s invitation to play in a tournament in Mexico. It was all the PR team could talk about, and that made Derek Unger even angrier with Lupe. Now the university’s public relations office planned to make a big deal out of the international trip. But she still needed to resolve all the details. “What’s in the packet?”
“There are enough for all of us.” Bonnie extracted red, white, and green ribbons emblazoned with gold letters spelling out International Delegate—Mexico Women’s Softball League.
“Let me see this stuff. It seems they are aiming for major news coverage for MWSL. What do the papers say?” Lupe decided she would plan a picture using the colorful ribbons with the PR office.
“The papers all say, ‘Temporary Sports Exchange Visa, November 10 to 15, 2009.’ Passport numbers, age, sex, date of birth, inoculation dates, medications, emergency numbers, and blood types all have designated blank spaces. Wow, they appear serious. We have enough for everyone. Hey, here’s one with your name already on it, and this has some extra questions,” Bonnie said.
“Oh, great. Extra questions. That’s all I need. Inform the team: Bring passports to practice.” She read the official documents aloud. “‘Proof of Employment, University Liability Insurance, and Oath of Responsibility for Minors.’ It’s unbelievable that we need all this just to play softball. How many of our players are under eighteen, or possibly twenty-one?” Lupe glanced over at her team roster. “It would be best to contact the university counsel’s office. We should get a lawyer’s opinion.”
