I’m off to do some banking. I appreciate you holding down the fort. I will be back.” Who would have thought overseeing the athletics department would turn out like this? Give me a ball and bat any day. Did Bonnie mention the tournament was in Mexico?
Water dripped from Lupe’s jacket onto the floor of the bank as she stood in front of the loan officer. He mopped up damp spots on her application with his handkerchief and slowly looked her over from her drippy head to her muddy shoes.
“I’m confused, Ms. Lopez. Is your husband the athletics director at the college? Is he cosigning your mother’s home improvement loan?” He circled the line that held her job title with a red pen.
“That is my position. I’m putting my name on the loan. And yes, that is my accurate salary.” She bit her bottom lip to control her anger. “What’s the processing time? I’ve had my checking account at this branch for years.”
“A loan is quite a different matter. It could take some time. How long have you held this position?” He occupied a seat behind a neat glass-topped desk and monitored the small puddles forming on the ground. “Your husband’s salary is not included here.”
“I listed that I’ve worked for the university for a considerable length of time. It’s on the form.” Lupe’s voice was rising. “I also indicated that I am single.”
“I see. Did your salary remain constant these four years?” The loan officer’s eyes skimmed the damp document. “Just a few more questions. You know, I was a college athlete myself. You must enjoy your work.”
Is this guy trying to annoy me? Lupe promised herself she would stay cool and get at least one thing done on this nightmare of a day. “I enjoy it when my teams win. We have a great year ahead of us.” She lied. “What was your sport?” She forced a weak smile.
