Lupe
Lupe Lopez preferred playing softball to sitting in her office in the Department of Athletics. She wanted to be on the field, but heavy rain made it impossible. As athletics director, she needed to submit a repair estimate for the saturated infield and present it at a departmental meeting. That would mean decreased funds for her players’ scholarships, sports equipment, and travel resources for her team, the Long Beach Waves.
Lupe wished building a championship lineup was her focus. But she faced a powerful opponent at the meeting and remained unprepared for the rivalry she faced after taking on the coaching position. The football coach, Derek Unger, harbored a deep aversion toward women in sports and desired her job at the university.
Why did she always sense a need to justify herself? First as a player, then as a repeat MVP award winner, with multiple All-Star selections, and after she’d starred as the pitcher for the 2008 US Olympic Team. Why? Her accomplishments on the field propelled her into her coaching role for the college team in 2009, and her position as the director of the entire athletics department. But even now, Derek Unger did not hesitate to spread malicious gossip about her.
