“Your parents are home at last, ladies!” Padre Romo jumped from his seat and hurried toward the house.
This was not the homecoming Alicia imagined for her parents. She wished she’d paid more attention to Dolores’s letter. After a day with the tax clerk, then delays by Padre Romo and the banker, this crowd surprised her. She realized, with a shock, the two old people on the veranda were Mama and Papa. “Clara, look.”
“That’s Mama and Papa. Lupita must be holding our baby brother,” Clara said.
“Welcome home, Ortega, I have been longing to meet you.” Even the banker approached Papa. They hugged like old friends, but Mama didn’t stand up.
“Mama?” All the tension of the last months emptied in a rush of tears. Alicia embraced Mama. She felt her bony shoulders and frail body. Papa looked at his old-time friend, Padre Romo, with confusion in his face. Just how terrible a toll had the travel taken on her parents?
“Your family needs you now,” said Maria Rodriguez. “I will gather my children. Private Valdez is ready to drive us.” She made the sign of the cross on her forehead. “Thank God they made it home.”
“Señora, will you allow Lupita to remain? She can be a great help here,” Clara said. “Look how she already holds our baby brother.”
“She would like to care for the child.” Maria whispered to Lupita who rocked the infant in her arms and smiled at Clara and Alicia. His blanket fell aside from his face and he looked up with large blue eyes.
