When Clara and Harris entered the sala they were still chattering and making their plans. Harris examined the papers on the table. He had his own plans for making his fortune in California. He only shared partial plans with those who could work for his advantage.
“I’ve figured out how we can use these old parchments, since your papa has no real business papers. A little candle wax and a stamp will make them look official.” He grinned like a schoolboy sharing a class project, then spread out all the land measurements and maps from their afternoon’s work on the dining table. “I’ve seen hundreds of ledgers and cargo bills. They are all the same.”
Harris gathered all he needed to make his phony ledger look authentic. He thumped across the sala in his muddy boots and pulled two candles from Mama’s altar, knocking into Mother Mary’s statuette.
Alicia and Nina peered in through the doorway. When the girls saw him approach Mama’s altar, they rushed in toward the table.
“What’s keeping our dinner, Alicia?” Clara was impatient to show that she was in charge of the house. “It’s about time. Get over here and serve our dear Captain Harris,” Clara said. Alicia could not stomach her sister’s dramatic manners.
“Our dear captain?” Alicia stomped forward with the first small plates of food. She would not let her sister boss her to wait on this man. Nina hesitated at the edge of the sala and kept looking over her shoulder, as if she expected to see the trapper at any time.
“There is only enough dinner for family members,” Alicia
said.
