Sparrow held her breath as she entered the nuns’ dining room. She kept her head low and caught sight of her dirty apron and ill-fitting shoes. She was relieved when Sister Placida paused to speak with Josefina’s aunt Alicia, who taught at the school but was not a part of the holy order of nuns. “Miss Alicia, your lesson about our local flowers and herbs received high praise from everyone. Congratulations.”
Sparrow had helped Aunt Alicia teach the lesson on plants and herbs, and it had made the other schoolgirls jealous.
“Thank you, Sister. I had an excellent helper.” Aunt Alicia turned to Sparrow and winked. Sparrow blushed. “She could be an excellent teacher someday.” Alicia’s words surprised Sparrow, and her eyes darted between the two women.
Then Sister Placida pointed at a chair with her chin, instructing Sparrow to sit.
“I don’t feel very well,” Sparrow said, needing to make some excuse to leave the room.
