Joey regretted that he was in uniform. The sergeant major held a significantly higher status in the military than a master sergeant. But Joey was not playing by the ordinary rules. “With all due respect Sergeant Major, I am with the CID,” Joey said, flashing his badge. “Tell the general he can see me here and now or he can see me in Washington while the Army Chief of Staff looks on, and he faces dereliction of duty. And you might very well be in the next room facing similar charges if you don’t communicate my message.”
The sergeant major was not so much impressed as amused. “The general had you pegged right, feisty fellow,” he responded as he pressed the intercom. “Terribly sorry to interrupt, sir. But I have the master sergeant you told me to expect. He insists on seeing you now.”
