Joey Klugman decided to walk from the commanding general’s headquarters to the 8-8-5-2. The half mile would give him time to think. And there were beginning to be lots of questions. Did General Stockton have more than a turf interest in this case? Did he really pick Manigrove because he was the bottom of the barrel? And, of course, that big, nagging question: What could have torn Manigrove’s insides apart?
“Hi-Di, Hi-Di, Hi-Di-Ho.
Only two more years to go.”
“SOUND OFF!”
“One, Two.”
“SOUND OFF!”
“Three, Four.”
“BREAK IT ON DOWN”
“One, Two, Three, Four,
One, Two
“THREE-FOUR.”
Joey looked up. The surprise wasn’t the platoon of recruits marching toward him.
It was the voice and then the sight of their sergeant.
