Jimmy flashed that toothy grin as they settled in for an all-nighter. “Listen,” he said with a hand behind his ear for emphasis.
Stephen looked at him for a moment. “No guns?”
“Can’t hear the range,” Jimmy nodded with a pouty lip, as if in contemplation.
“It always sounds weird when they stop firing, doesn’t it?”
Rick’s dad will be home tonight. Avoid Rick tomorrow, Stephen thought, leaving a mental note for himself. Rick’s always a piece of work when his dad has to miss a day.
They laid the board out and started playing.
“I don’t get Rick,” Jimmy said without looking up as he finished setting up his pieces for the game. “That was, like, nuts.”
Stephen, lost in momentary thought, gave a sideways smoosh of his mouth before responding, “I don’t know. We knew each other in Monterey. He was always kind of a tough guy, but that was ridiculous.”
Jimmy froze in the momentary silence. “Did you hear that?”
“What?” Stephen shook his head, thinking Jimmy looked like a dog on point, listening to something Stephen had obviously missed.
Jimmy stretched slow and long with a shiver at the end, extending to his full length to peek out the window. “It’s raining,” he drawled eerily.
