Exercise Eight: What We Need
Remember Maslow’s hierarchy of needs from your college psychology classes? That we all have basic human needs which range from the requirements of food and shelter to higher needs such as self-esteem and self-actualization? Read Liesel Mueller’s poem “Why I Need the Birds,” or the example writings with this exercise, and make a list of the necessities you have in your life. What do you need? Your list might include your need for dirt under your fingernails, music, or your need for green. Be as specific as you can. Now write, beginning with the phrase “I need.”
