A loud boom echoed in her ears. Debris from a barrel flew through the air and the ground shook. Lana’s ears rang for a moment, then she couldn’t hear anything. Thick smoke spread through the air; the redheaded man knelt down and hacked from the smoke.
The youngest one’s horse bucked wildly, throwing him. The rider lost his grip and floated through the air before his head cracked against a wall and his horse galloped away. Lana’s ears buzzed. Through dense, purple-hued smoke, she saw her father trying to get up and regain composure. The raiders stood motionless, stunned and baffled. The chaos was her advantage to take.
