Elle angrily brushed away a small tear that slid down her cheek and tried to concentrate on the things that might help bring JJ home. “How does the Amber Alert work?”
“A notice goes out through radio and television stations. They also put it on billboards above the freeways. They activated it in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa.”
“Do they have a picture of JJ?”
“Not yet. We need to find one as soon as we get you home. I’ll send it to the office through my cell phone.” Wendy turned the car onto Locust Avenue. They drove down the street and turned into the driveway.
Elle looked up at the house. It seemed cold and uninviting.
The main problem, as far as she could tell, was how quickly time kept slipping away. Every minute JJ was gone reduced his chances of ever coming home. Didn’t anyone else understand how important it was to hurry up?
She jumped out of the car, but her mother didn’t move.
Wendy unstrapped her seat belt before reaching over to do the same with Ginny’s.
Elle watched as Wendy got out of the car and walked around to open the passenger door. She gently took hold of her mom’s elbow to help her out.
