Brody and Emma could hear Rose and Max getting louder. They were arguing again. Aspen stood in the middle of them as if she was trying to stop the fight. Emma knew that she had to get the girls out of the store before the owner overheard them talking about portals and time travel.
“Uh, thank you, sir,” Emma said as she swiftly grabbed Max and Rose by the arms and led them out the door and into the crowded street.
Brody and Aspen followed close behind. Emma kept walking until she found a secluded, empty spot near the corner of Market Street and East Bay Street where the parade ended and the party began. People from the parade were dancing to loud music blaring from speakers placed along the sidewalk and hung from the lampposts. Orange and black lights hung on the store fronts giving a creepy feel to the party. Rose and Max continued to argue even after Emma told them to be quiet.
“What is wrong with you two? Do you want someone to overhear you talking about how we got here?” Emma could feel her head getting hot. Max would not stop yelling at Rose about who really opened the portal.
“I know it was you.” Max glared at Rose. “How did you do it? No one knows about the cave but the three of us and my grandparents.”
“It wasn’t me. I told you,” Rose yelled back.
“Did you watch us when we arrived in Australia?” Max asked. Her voice grew louder with each word.
Brody and Emma circled the girls. “Quiet,” Brody insisted.
“No!” Rose yelled ignoring Brody’s pleas.
“You figured it out somehow,” Max said. “And now you have to forget it.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Yes, you do.”
“No, I don’t,” Rose repeated louder.
“Yes, you do. You don’t get to use the crystal cave.”
