The train lurched to a halt. Rama spied two nuns. They’re here! Rama reached outside, turned the door handle, and very nearly fell down the steps to the platform.
“Mano, Mano I’m here.” Rama trotted swiftly towards the nuns. A child turned around. “Mano, it’s me. Mama.” Tears streamed down Rama’s face. Rama reached her daughter, dropped to her knees, and hugged the child so tightly there was no separation between them.
“Mano, I’ve missed you so much! Let me kiss you all over.”
After about a dozen kisses, Mano giggled and pulled away.
“I thought you forgot me,” Mano said.
Rama drew back. Her baby wasn’t a baby anymore. She was wearing a smock with her hair tied in one long braid. She looks how I used to feel. Abandoned.
