Songs, perfumes, even noises like sirens and alarms, can evoke memories, strong emotional responses. This is similar to the neuro-linguistic programming technique of anchoring, whereby a tap on the arm, an action in one's peripheral vision or a certain, out-of-the-ordinary noise can replay the emotions experienced when the anchor was planted. This can be for good or for ill, and that's a point we will be covering later on in the book.
