DROWNING
Dying-Age 3
Pretty lights twinkle, smothering Mama’s call. Big ball of Night’s sky lifts from far off in the distance. You’ve decided to bring it home like the stones you’ve tucked into your nappy. Lasso it down from Sky’s perch. You step in a little closer and lapping waves giggle as they play out a tune to carry you, Fasha, Fasha. Water’s music slips in and around, bobbing up and down.
You sing along.
Water knows your name.
“Edward.”
Mustn’t go in too far. Yet those same whispering warbles like Mama’s voice invite sprays that tickle your ankles. Up to your knees, your tummy…your chin. Heart beats wildly against Water’s wet kisses. And then─
Color is gone.
Swept under. Swallowed whole in the mouth of something hollow. A place where lassos can’t reach. Big ball of Light still casts its glow. It plays hide and seek above you now. Pulling on Breath. Can’t reach. You gasp while everything slows.
Light so sharp.
Painful glass bursts inside. Time to kick─move up─away. And then…Emptiness turns to ease. Drifting down. Calm, while warmth wraps you up.
The voices dance on a mirrored carousel. Their shuddering murmurs bleed out, “Come, boy, you don’t have to wait anymore.”
It is time to let go.
You are Edward Story
and you have reached the other side.
