There are always opportunities to say “thank you” or “I noticed” and to affirm the desired attitudes and behaviors for the workplace you want to create.
People want to be noticed, recognized and affirmed. The more specific the affirmation, the more sincere it will sound. Sincerity is crucial. Sincere affirmation and recognition are heartfelt. While people do want to be affirmed, they do not want to be manipulated. People can sense the difference with manipulation, if not at first then over time. Manipulating others will diminish your ability to lead and influence.
The spirited leader recognizes that followers tend to model the leader’s behaviors, not her words. Thus, to transform the workplace into a more energizing, innovative happening, the spirited leader monitors each and every communication. Will this communication foster the culture I desire? Transformation always begins with you, the leader. Leaders set the culture. Culture beats the formal business strategy every time.
Recognize and affirm to invigorate greatness!
