Carnal Moon
“How bad is it?” Gwen ran the water until warm then dipped an edge of the towel under the faucet.
“The bleeding has slowed.” Nick gingerly peeled the shirt away from his skin. “If you’re squeamish, you might not want to see this.”
Gwen came around Nick. “My concern for you overcomes that.” She couldn’t stop the gasp at the sight of the ugly wound. The edges of Nick’s skin were burnt, and the surrounding area was an angry purplish-red. Blood welled up and dripped out as Nick tried to sit comfortably. It wasn’t over six inches, but it was the scariest injury she’d ever seen.
Nick held out a bloody hand for the towel. “Normally, this would be partially healed.” He grimaced as he pressed the soft cotton against the blackened skin. “But since silver is toxic to vampires, it takes longer to heal.”
“Is there anything I can do?” Gwen asked. Her eyes were full of guilt. “I’m sorry this occurred. This is all my fault.”
Nick raised an eyebrow. “How is this your responsibility? Marcus and Hugo are to blame, not you.”
“This wouldn’t have happened if not for me.” Gwen went to retrieve a plastic shopping bag as she quietly sniffed.
“This isn’t life threatening, Gwen.” Nick saw the welling tears as she put his bloodied shirt into the bag. “I’m not mad at you for this.” He wanted to touch Gwen, but his hands weren’t exactly clean.
Gwen closed the bag while avoiding Nick’s gaze. “You’re in pain because of me.”
“No, one asshole gave another asshole a silver knife,” Nick said. “If we’re going to assign blame, it’s on Hugo. And don’t worry, I’ll return the favor.” He smiled evilly. “They’re about to regret their actions, I promise it.”
