Despite the war that consumed every part of my life during these first few years of
living in Los Angeles, I can’t deny that I was also exposed to unique excitement and
glamour. I was too young to grasp how very special my life was, compared to millions of
children throughout the country. Few children can see beyond today or tomorrow, and
most are centered on themselves. Like any child between five and twelve, I lived in the
moment.
Sometimes, if I was awake when Daddy got home, he’d bring me toast and warm milk
and sit on the edge of my bed and tell me about Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley
who were in the movie, The Wizard of Oz, with Judy Garland.
I was about seven years old when Daddy started to play at Ciro’s Nightclub in West
Hollywood
