My own dear Susy,
This morning directly after breakfast your dear letter was handed in by Hannah together with one to Anna from darling Mittie - Your letters are even like cold water to a thirsty soul. My darling blessed child how I do wish that your time was over with the Dr that you could leave your “little Hospital bed,” and occupy your own nice high level bed- but we must have patience darling - I am so glad the Dr thinks you are better - What a subject for gratitude is this - I am glad little Mittie goes to see you often and that you can sometimes see the dear children - what a companionable little thing Bamie [Anna Roosevelt] is - I know exactly how she will look when she dines with you - She will put on what Mittie calls the rag - baby look - This is her birth day, little darling! We do enjoy our nice beds very much in order not to make our beds sink in the middle Anna and I sleep first on one side of the bed and then on the other. Anna says she calculates the exact spot on which she sleeps every night so as never to sleep on the same spot two nights in succession - We went last night to a party at Mrs Pattersons - I sat on one of the sofas with old Mrs Baud all of the evening, so I enjoyed the evening - I do not think Anna and Hill were as comfortable as I was - However we all liked the supper which was a very nice one - Hill says the chicken salad was splendid - I think he must have done justice to the good things, as he confessed this morning that he had a night mare in the night - Anna says she does not know who heard him when he talked like forty doll [forty dollars] The house keeping all goes on very well - today we have a piece of roast mutton & Hill said he would rather go without currant jelly than to trouble his head about getting any - Anna says she could only make your Tiny last night wear one glove and carry the other in his hand. And this one glove was worn merely to enter the room - I am glad Mrs Roosevelt is better - I hope she may get on quite well - I have not heard lately from Stuart [Daniel Stuart Elliott] - Anna has written Lucy - We will attend to the settlement with the 16 St man today - Irvine is much more at home than formerly, and I think studies better also - I will not send Lucy, things for a long time to come as I have to have her dress dyed - The three dollars which you are to hand to Mittie I wish you to tell her are from me, and that I will write her very shortly what to do with it - With much love to Mitty and yourself in which Anna - joins I am your most
