Winter’s Wonder: A Simple Season
In Winter it may feel harsh to view Nature stripped of her colorful foliage and fruit from previous seasons. Yet bare branches reaching out like boney fingers, fallow ground waiting for the first snow, and a monotone earth and sky declare simplicity at its finest. This season encourages you to adopt a simpler style as well. In his book, Lightposts for Living: The Art of Choosing a Joyful Life, Thomas Kinkade writes, “True simplicity begins when you learn to enjoy the amazing abundance of what is already yours.” Some women do not favor the Winter season so they spend energy complaining rather than enjoying its unique qualities and health opportunities. Maybe it is time for you to explore the merit of Winter’s characteristics and gifts.
Although the true Winter season suggests a quieter, restful, comfort-and-joy time, most calendars groan under the load of seasonal and holiday activities. Contemporary technology and progress sometimes takes you farther from the simple basics of Nature’s rhythms. I’ve already mentioned the adverse affects of chronic busyness on your overall health and vitality. Several of my clients suffer frequent—but often unnecessary—illness, pain and emotional upheaval during the Winter. Pain, restlessness or distress often indicate that it is time to make some lifestyle changes—physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually—for optimum wellness.
In winter, a voice says: “Be gentle, slow down, let your soul catch up with your body.” ~Verna Patrick, quoted from Health Wisdom for Women, January 1998
