Later that night, I quietly read the two letters that my mom had sent. The first one was sent after my parents had returned from their one-week vacation in Britain. Mom was distraught that she had not received the telex from me on arrival. Just reading it made me angry, as I had paid good money to send the telegram. She also gave me the names of two teachers from Berkeley, the Gartenbergs, who were posted on sabbatical in Delhi. They were friends of our family’s good friends Alan and Rowena McGregor in Walnut Creek. Mom urged me to look them up whenever I went to Delhi.
Right, Mom, I thought. Not only is Calcutta on the other side of India from Delhi, but how am I to find the Gartenbergs in that huge city of Delhi with no address?
