Carnal Moon
“When would you have told me?” Gwen toyed with the end of her shawl. Did Nick still have interest in her? And for what purpose?
“It depended on how tonight went.” Nick looked over at Gwen as they waited at a light. Her staccato heartbeats filled the cab along with the honeyed scent of her blood. He wanted to reach out and touch her cheek, but held back. Thanks to that fucktard Hugo, the progress he’d made with Gwen was washed down the drain. Now he had to regain her trust, and then some, since she knew he was a damn vampire.
“For a vampire, your scent is really nice.” Gwen’s voice was quiet with uncertainty.
An alarm bell went off. Nick wasn’t sure he’d heard that right. “Did you say you can smell me?” He hoped this wasn’t what he suspected. God help them both if it was.
An apprehensive frown crossed Gwen’s face. “Does it make you mad?”
“No, not at all, but you shouldn’t be able to smell me.”
“Is this a bad thing?” Gwen’s expression was tense as if expecting disapproval.
Nick reached out and gently squeezed one of her fidgeting hands. “You haven’t done anything wrong. Normally, only vampires can smell each other. To humans, we possess no noticeable scent.” He returned his hand to the steering wheel as they turned onto her street. “This is unexpected, that’s all.” Answers were needed before going any further with his thoughts. Once the shock wore off, she’d never see him again.
