The motel room had cable TV. While his dad slept on top of the bed, Benny sat cross-legged on the floor, using the end of the bed as a backrest, and watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He had it turned down low and could hear Grace snoring in the room next door.
He'd seen the movie before. Lots of times. Captain Jack Sparrow's boat sinks so he has to find another one, but he ends up in jail and the doggie won't give him the key to get out. The Black Pearl sails into port and shoots cannon balls at the town and blows everything up. The pirates want their gold back.
Benny realized it was all about treasure – finding it and keeping it. He found a bag of treasure. Now he had to figure out how to keep it. If he could just get Daddy to parley with him, but Daddy didn't take him serious.
Everybody takes pirates serious. The people of the town ran away screaming. The pirates took what they wanted and did what they wanted.
Benny remembered seeing a neat store across from the motel when he carried his suitcase up the stairs. He told Daddy he wanted to go there but Daddy said it had to wait 'til after he took a nap. Benny twisted around and peeked at his daddy's mouth hanging open and his closed eyes.
Nighty night, Benny thought, and quietly put his shoes on.
