I was too excited to rest and went outside into the evening air. The sun had set and the first stars looked down upon us. I followed the sound of music to the garden. Some of the king's wives were sitting there, drinking beer and wine and eating sweetmeats, all tired after the long walk.
Some began dancing, slowly, swaying under the night sky. I pushed back my hood and let my body follow the path of the melody. I let my white hair fly as I swirled, feeling the weight of the tresses, knowing they would soon be gone. Any day now my hair would be shaved off so I could be purified and enter the tent of the embalmers. Queen Tiye had given the order that I was to learn all about the ways of death.
I could catch glimpses of the reason for this all around us in the garden. Translucent forms reaching their hands to us, speaking without voices, trying to make themselves known to those they had loved in life.
I closed my eyes to them so I could avoid the pleas of the dead, whom I could now see.
