Jenny followed Anthony with her eyes as he jogged towards the other end of the car park. She was stunned. His story made no sense to her. This is bizarre, there must be a logical explanation. If only I knew what . . .
But, of course! Barry . . . He would know what to do.
Why had she not thought of him earlier?
She saw Anthony reach the phone booth. She was not sure how he would react to her involving others in this business, but he was in such a state he wasn’t able to think clearly and she had to do something.
Jenny had met Barry a few months before when he was out on an investigation and accidentally ended up at the wrong address, which happened to be their office. They had immediately clicked and she'd been seeing him on a regular basis ever since. Jenny was wary, not feeling quite ready to get too involved. At the same time, she enjoyed the new-found companionship. She had not spoken to him for a week. Though well aware that three o’ clock in the morning might not a good time, she was actually looking forward to hearing his voice again and hoped he wouldn’t be upset with her.
At last! Captain Adams thought when the phone rang. At this time of the morning it must mean they had found him. He allowed the phone to ring a few times. De Villiers did not need to know he'd been sitting next to the phone all night, waiting for his call.
‘Adams!’ He answered. His expression changed to astonishment when he recognised the voice on the other end of the line.
‘Jenny, what a surprise! This time of the night . . . are you alright? Is there a problem, can I help?’
While he listened to Jenny, a chill ran down his spine, quickly turning to panic. It was the moment he had dreaded. He had just begun to think that soon this would all be over. Why did this have to happen now? In a few short weeks and Anthony and Jane would have been finished and out of their lives. He’d hoped his relationship with Jenny would develop into something really meaningful. What must I do?he wondered, knowing well the decision had already been taken for him. I have no choice.
‘Where is Anthony now Jenny? Is he still with you?’
Jenny looked across the parking lot to where Anthony was coming out of the phone booth.
‘No, he is outside making a call, trying to reach Jane. I must go now, he is on his way back. I don’t want him to know I contacted you.’
‘Wait for me Jenny, I’ll be right over. Whatever you do, keep him for a few minutes and, yes, don't tell him you called. It might spook him.’
Jenny looked in the direction she’d seen Anthony a moment ago, however he’d disappeared. Peering into the darkness, she made out his silhouette near the phone booth; he was sitting on a park bench. Her first thought was to call out to him, but then she decided to let him be and bide her time until Barry arrived.
